Dawson Falls Power Station

This walk visits one of the world's oldest continuously operating generators. You'll be able to hear Kāpuni Stream, which drives the generator that provides electricity for the Dawson Falls Tourist Lodge. Learn about the historic Dawson Falls Power Station

Getting there: The walk begins 50 m down Manaia Road from the Dawson Falls visitor centre.

Dawson Falls

Time: 10 min one way

Distance: 250 m

Descend the short stepped track to join Kapuni Loop Track and turn right to continue on either to the base of the 18 metre falls or the lookout point. The falls were named after Thomas Dawson, the first European to discover this 18 m high waterfall in 1885.

To Māori, they are known as Te Rere o Noke or the Falls of Noke, a Māori warrior who hid from his pursuers behind the falls.

Getting there: From the Dawson Falls visitor centre walk 400 m down Manaia Road to the sign to Dawson Falls.

Conditions

No dogs. Dawson Falls Visitor Centre is open reduced hours: Thursday – Sunday 9am – 4pm; 7 days a week during school holidays, 9am – 4pm.

How to get here

In Stratford, turn off SH23 into Celia Street, which becomes Opunake Road. Follow this for 14 km, then turn right into Manaia Road and travel 9 km up the mountain to Dawson Falls visitor centre.
