Remembering Ric Cullinane
We are saddened to share that our former chief executive, Ric Cullinane, passed away on 3 November, surrounded by his family. Ric was one of the Commission’s original team members, joining in 2010 and assuming the role of chief executive in 2018. He played a pivotal role in our formation, including establishing and leading the regional field advisor network across Aotearoa.
During his time, Ric guided the commission through a period of significant growth and transformation. He oversaw major public access projects in Taranaki, Franklin-North Waikato, Mangawhai, Tairāwhiti, Northland, Banks Peninsula, and Aotea–Great Barrier Island. His leadership saw the upgrade of the WAMS mapping system. He drove the renaming and rebranding of Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa, the Outdoor Access Commission. He introduced a new engagement kaupapa with tangata whenua.
Ric’s calm, thoughtful approach and his ability to connect with landholders, recreationists, and communities across the motu earned him deep respect and admiration. His legacy will continue to shape our work for years.
