Cyclone Gabrielle: possible track damage
Cyclone Gabrielle brought strong wind, heavy rain and large swells to New Zealand. Many facilities in affected regions are closed.
The recent weather events in January and February have created significant damage to tracks trails and outdoor recreation spots in Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Waikato, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, East Coast and Hawkes Bay.
Please be aware that the current state of tracks and other outdoor recreation infrastructure may be unknown, it is likely that there is significant damage, such as track washouts and slips. Be prepared for this. Be mindful that streams and rivers may have changed their course and that trees may have fallen. We advise a cautious approach until you can know more.
Take care in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle. Do not put pressure on our emergency services by walking on tracks that are closed. Emergency services need to prioritise helping storm-affected people. Make sure you find shelter while the storm passes.
