A new track to Sharplin Falls
Mid Canterbury’s much-treasured walk to Sharplin Falls has reopened along a new route on the other side of the valley.
The previous track was closed 10 years ago after earthquakes damaged a gantry section. The Department of Conservation did not want to reopen the track due to the ongoing danger of rock fall, so the Mt Somers Walkways Society set out to create a new track to the falls.
Our Regional Field Advisor Geoff Holgate worked closely with the society to help them develop the new track. We also provided an Enhanced Access Grant of $20,000 towards track construction. Other donors and many volunteers helped make the track and its two new bridges a reality.
