Vacancy: Regional field advisor for Waikato and Taupō

Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa, the Outdoor Access Commission, is the Crown agent responsible for providing leadership on outdoor access issues. Our role is to advise on and advocate for free, certain, enduring, and practical access to the outdoors.

About the role

We seek an experienced person to be our field advisor for the Waikato and Taupō region.

The position is a part-time (approximately 2 days a week) independent contractor role.

The contract rate for the role is $56.50 an hour (plus GST if applicable).

As a Regional Field Advisor, you will work with communities to uphold and create connections to and across the land. Your responsibilities will include creating, retaining, and promoting public access opportunities in your region, resolving access disputes, and caring for access to the land and the people who live, work, and play on it.

The role requires the physical ability to visit and inspect locations relevant to public access.  

What we are looking for

Herenga ā Nuku is seeking a person who demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of access rights and responsibilities, land status and general understanding of the related legal context
  • Knowledge and understanding of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with tangata whenua, local government, landholders, government agencies, recreation and trail groups
  • A passion for access in the outdoors and connections within our stakeholder network
  • Understanding, familiarity, or interest in maps and GIS-based technology systems
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Robust record-keeping and reporting experience
  • Proven negotiation, influencing and advocacy skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, and the ability to work independently within a supportive team environment
