Allowing a legal walkway on your land can be straightforward. It lets people walk or ride safely across your farm, forest or land under conditions you choose.
The law enables landholders to grant access to recreational visitors. They are still obliged to warn visitors of risks that they wouldn’t normally expect.
If a landholder is charging a fee for access, an activity that might have been purely recreational, such as access to a fishing spot, becomes a workplace activity.
We are working with Federated Farmers and Rural Women NZ to provide signage for landholders to use to mark agreeable and voluntarily granted access routes.
