Wanted: community-led trail groups

There are passionate, community-led trail building groups all across Aotearoa. They are helping to create adventures and connections for locals and visitors.

The Commission hosted its first ever national trails trust online hui in September. We’re looking for more walking or cycling trail building groups to join us and share their enthusiasm for developing and growing trails.

Bernice Prakash, Engagement Advisor and hui facilitator says the hui helps groups to share knowledge, ideas and resources. It also provides a space for people to connect.

“Trail building groups often face similar challenges and opportunities,” says Bernice. “Sharing knowledge and knowing who to call can be a huge help. Coming together across New Zealand also creates a collaborative voice for community trails group in New Zealand.”

September hui attendees reported it was great to be able to connect with others; even in that short time, hearing about some of their stories and advice was incredibly valuable.

This hui is organised by the Commission but led by trail group members across the motu.

Meetings will be four times a year, the next hui will be Thursday 18 November from 12-1pm via Zoom.

If you or someone you know would like to join the hui, please email partners@walkingaccess.govt.nz
