Regional Trail Strategy Development
Herenga ā Nuku works closely with local government, iwi partners and community stakeholders to support the development of long-term tracks and trails strategies.
This work supports goals to grow connectivity and well-being at local community levels in ways that successfully extend access, recreation, and targeted tourism opportunities at a regional scale.
Our work in Regional Trail Strategy Development includes:
- South Island High Country Project (2018)
- Taranaki Trails Strategy Project (2018)
- Pūhoi to Pākiri Matakana Project (2019)
- Connecting Franklin-North Waikato Project (2020)
- Tairāwhiti project (2021)
Herenga ā Nuku Regional Trail Strategy Development projects use the following staged process:
Phase 1: Scoping Study
- Identifying key issues and opportunities
- Bringing partners, champions and stakeholders into the project
- Identifying relevant regional and national policies and frameworks
- Inventory and audit of current regional trails and related facilities
Phase 2: Strategy Development
- Involves working closely with all involved and uses a co-design development process
- Investigating key values and the local context
- Determining the overarching kaupapa, purpose and narrative
- Setting the strategy, including its alignment with other policies and frameworks
Phase 3: Trail Project Development Phase
- Breaks down strategy into ‘bite-sized’ projects
- Determining the specific tracks and trails projects including phases, champions and priorities
- Determining capacity-building requirements
Phase 4: Strategy implementation
- Supporting relevant agencies to implement the strategy
- Providing materials to include in relevant long-term community planning processes
- Setting a first stage 3 year implementation plan
As well as helping structure the trail strategy development process, Herenga ā Nuku can also facilitate hosting 1- and 2-day workshops that engage interested groups in the key steps and methods used to develop a successful regional trail strategy.
