Meet two new Commission staff

Amie Point  Regional Field Advisor (Otago)

Amie moved to rural Māniatoto after gaining a degree in Marketing Management and Design at Otago and travelling the world for two years. Living in a sparse geographical area with a population of just 1200, Amie found her focus moving towards community development, communications and promotions. Volunteering on the local radio, art deco, local events and promotions committees kept her busy while having her two daughters whom now attend the local area school. Towards the end of a four year contract to the Department of Internal Affairs in a community and economic development role for the Māniatoto area, Amie and family and friends transformed her late father's Friday dental practice into an art, clothing, local products and coffee shop; The Practice Retail Therapy in Ranfurly. This lead to the streamlining of volunteer commitments to allow part-time work in the shop and part-time work elsewhere. Husband Jeff is an agricultural operator, engineer and creator of unique pieces for The Practice.

Amie still facilitates the local business group, is Chair of the local arts council and editor of the local paper Positively Māniatoto. These roles support local businesses and creatives as well as keeping Amie in touch with the local community which is important to her. She especially enjoys sharing the positive stories of rural life and how unique the area is.

Over the years Amie has walked the Routeburn, Hollyford, Coupland Track to Welcome Flat hut (twice), Rees Dart and parts of the Silverpeaks tracks and is looking forward to sharing these and many others with her children. Swimming has become a bit of an addiction when Amie can get to a swimming pool and she is planning on getting the bike out again this Summer.

Margret Fleck  Senior Analyst

Margret recently started with the Commission as a secondee from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Originally from Christchurch, Margret moved to Wellington for study and ended up staying, some 20+ years ago.

With a BSC from Canterbury University and a Masters in Library and Information Studies from Victoria University (VUW), Margret initially specialised in law working at VUW Law School, Department for Courts and Rudd Watts and Stone now Minter Ellison Rudd Watts. During this period she also  completed a Legal Executive Certificate.

In a change of career, Margret next went to work for the Department of Conservation and then the Department of Labour as a business planner, before going back to the Ministry of Justice to work for the Maori Land Court. Later, she was transferred to the Special Jurisdictions team which looks after all the minor courts and tribunals including the Environment Court.

From there she went to work for MPI, where she's based in the Office of the Director General in the Strategy Directorate, as a Senior Analyst in the Planning and Performance team. Her team is responsible for monitoring the Commission as part of MPI's responsibilities under the Crown Entities Act 2004, so when the opportunity came up to assist with developing new performance measures for the Commission, she volunteered to help out.

Outside of work, Margret's interests are varied, with playing petanque and trying to catch-up with movie watching two big features. Along with her husband, she also tries to corral their two labradors.
