Discover New Zealand's gazetted Walkways

Keen outdoorspeople can now track down information about some of New Zealand's top walkways on the New Zealand Walking Access Commission's website.

A new section has been created on the website to provide information about the gazetted walkways of New Zealand. Gazetted walkways are those walking tracks that have been established under the Walking Access Act 2008 and its predecessor statutes and declared as walkways in the Government's official newspaper, the New Zealand Gazette.

The Walkways section of the site provides an overview of each Walkway and how to access it, with links to the Walking Access Mapping System and other websites that may be of interest to people who want further information.

New Zealand Walking Access Commission Chief Executive Mark Neeson said the new section would create a one stop shop for people looking for summary information about the country's gazetted walkways. Detailed information about individual tracks can still be found on many other websites, including the website of the Department of Conservation (DOC).

“Governance of walkways is an important part of the Commission's role and it's our hope that the new walkways area will help encourage locals and overseas visitors make the most of our country's great outdoors.â€
